Epic Games Store
Available from December 4 to December 11
Epic is feeling generous this week with two distinct offerings. One is a solitary, atmospheric detective game, and the other is arguably the best “get the family off the couch” tool in existence.
The Jackbox Party Pack 4
If you have family visiting for the holidays, claiming this is mandatory. Jackbox Party Pack 4 is widely considered one of the stronger entries in the series. It includes Fibbage 3 (a trivia bluffing game that is almost impossible not to laugh at), Survive the Internet, and Monster Seeking Monster.3
The beauty of Jackbox is that only the host needs the game; everyone else plays using their smartphones as controllers. It’s chaotic, accessible to non-gamers, and completely free this week.
The Darkside Detective
On the other end of the spectrum is The Darkside Detective.4 This is a distinctively charming point-and-click adventure that feels like a pixel-art love letter to Twin Peaks and The X-Files.5
You play as Detective Francis McQueen, the sole member of the “Darkside Division,” investigating occult crimes in a town where ghosts and cults are just a Tuesday annoyance.6 The writing is genuinely funny, the soundtrack by Ben Prunty (who did FTL) is a bop, and it’s the perfect “cozy game” for a cold December evening.7
- Heads Up: Next week (Dec 11), Epic is switching back to “Mystery Games” to coincide with The Game Awards.8 Expect something big.
Amazon Prime Gaming
Available Now (December Monthly Drop)
If you have an Amazon Prime subscription, you have games waiting for you. The December lineup just launched, and the headliner is a legitimate AAA title that released only recently.
LEGO 2K Drive
- Redeems on: Epic Games Store
This is the big win of the month. LEGO 2K Drive is an open-world racing game that feels like a mashup of Forza Horizon and Mario Kart, but made of bricks.9 You can build your own vehicles piece-by-piece, race across destructible biomes, and seamlessly transform from a street racer to a boat depending on the terrain. It’s colorful, surprisingly deep, and fantastic for kids.
GYLT
- Redeems on: GOG / Amazon Games App
Formerly a Google Stadia exclusive, GYLT is a “gateway horror” game. It has the stealth and puzzle mechanics of a scary game, but the tone is more Coraline than Resident Evil. You play as a young girl searching for her cousin in a twisted, surreal version of her school. It’s short, polished, and definitely worth a download.
Forgotten Realms: The Archives – Collection One
- Redeems on: GOG
Old-school RPG fans, eat your heart out. This collection includes the legendary Eye of the Beholder trilogy. These are hardcore, dungeon-crawling classics from the early 90s. They are tough as nails and don’t hold your hand, but they are essential history for anyone who loves Baldur’s Gate 3 and wants to see where the genre started.
Steam: The Must-Play Free Release
Marvel Rivals
While not a “limited time” giveaway, the biggest story in PC gaming right now is the launch of Marvel Rivals.
This 6v6 hero shooter is completely free-to-play and has exploded in popularity this week.10 Think Overwatch, but instead of shooting barriers, you are Hulk smashing buildings or swinging around as Spider-Man. The environmental destruction is a game-changer—walls and floors can be destroyed, opening up new lines of sight instantly.
If you have been feeling burnout from other competitive shooters, Marvel Rivals is the fresh, chaotic injection of fun you are looking for.
